Session 31: Innovations in industrial microbiology and biotechnology: USDA-ARS Utilizations Centers celebrate 75th anniversary
Thursday, July 28, 2016: 8:00 AM-11:30 AM
Bayside A, 4th Fl (Sheraton New Orleans)
Deepak Bhatnagar - USDA-ARS
Badal C. Saha - USDA-ARS-NCAUR
The four utilization centers were established around 1940 to create new value-added uses for surpluses of region specific crops and their by-products.  These are: Eastern Regional Research Center (ERRC) in Wyndmoor, PA; Western Regional Research Center (WRRC) in Albany, CA; National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research (NCAUR) in Peoria, IL; and Southern Regional Research Center (SRRC) in New Orleans, LA.  Improved methods of ensuring product quality, detecting foodborne pathogens and creating biobased fuels and chemicals are among technological innovations arising from 75 years of scientific innovation and excellence at these centers.  This session will focus on highlighting a few of the enormous R & D accomplishments related to Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology in each of these centers and success stories in technology transfer from these research centers to the marketplace.
