Session 30: Industrialization of synthetic biology and metabolic engineering
Thursday, July 28, 2016: 8:00 AM-11:30 AM
Waterbury, 2nd Fl (Sheraton New Orleans)
Convener:
Reshma Shetty - Ginkgo Bioworks
Co-Convener:
Ken Bruno - Zymergen
The process of bioengineering of microbes for industrial production of chemicals and enzymes has largely been an empirical process to date.  New technologies including automation, computation, wetware tools, advanced analytics and CAD/CAM software are leading to the systematization and industrialization of genetic engineering.  This session will cover the challenges and successes in moving projects from the bench to large scale industrial fermentation and identify new areas for investment going forward.
