The ERRC is one of four government-funded Regional Research Centers in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), U.S. Department of Agriculture, established by an Act of Congress in 1938.

ERRC conducts fundamental, applied and developmental research on a broad spectrum of agricultural commodities with the following major thrusts: Chemical and microbial food safety and food preservation technologies; Sustainable bioenergy and agricultural practices; Advanced dairy and food processing technologies; Edible films and active packaging technologies; Bioactive ingredients and functional foods; and Biobased products.

The new knowledge and technologies developed in above areas are transferred to stakeholders and customers in both private and public sectors through strategic partnership.
