This talk will outline the process used to validate methods in microbiology.  Important statistical attributes tested in this process are resemblance of control data, ruggedness of the method to slight changes in operational factors not of interest, responsiveness of the method to changes in operational factors of interest, and repeatability and reproducibility of the method's results across multiple experiments and laboratories.  These attributes will be illustrated by presenting results from recent single-laboratory and multi-laboratory studies of ASTM's standard single tube biofilm method.
