There are several recognized global microbiological method schemes used to validate alternative (rapid) methods for the evaluation of foods, feeds and environmental samples.  The schemes most widely in use are:  AOAC International – following AOAC Guidelines (published 2012); and MicroVal Certification or NF Validation (via AFNOR) – following ISO 16140 (current version 2003).

A project led by an AOAC International Stakeholder Panel on Analytical Methods (ISPAM), focused on the harmonization of common criteria between a number of global method validation schemes.  Some progress was made, and these changes have since been incorporated into the revision of ISO 16140 that will be published in 2015.  Updates to AOAC Guidelines are also in process.

Similarities and differences between these updated schemes will be highlighted and discussed.
