For many years the bioprocess industry has taken the needs of fermentation applications for granted, often choosing instead to focus on those of cell culture and the resulting technologies handed down to fermentation. Recently, this has begun to change as the challenging aspects of fermentation management are increasingly recognized while at the same time industry interest in fermentation applications is on the rise. The result is a new era of hard and soft technology, known collectively as PAT.
In this discussion we will explore the leading hard and soft technologies that are defining PAT for fermentation applications. This will include emerging hardware technology such as sensors that are enabling the real-time continuous measurement of the fermentation process and software technology such as DoE that is leveraging the information from these sensors to deliver QbD. We will also explore how proven technologies are evolving in their capabilities to play a role in PAT, DoE and QbD for the purpose of improving fermentation management.
