Microbiome science is given rise to novel nutritional and therapeutic strategies for the management of human health and disease. The development of gut commensals as next generation probiotics or therapeutic microbes has attracted a lot of attention. This presentation will describe some of the opportunities and challenges that are likely to shape the applications over the next years. In particular it will focus on learnings from current probiotic science that is mainly based on lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria. Finally, the need for robust production platforms and technologies will be highlighted.
