In-line optical density sensors offer a low cost, high value alternative to off-line, manual process controls during microbial fermentations. Invasive non-real time, off-line sampling, testing and operator response obviate the selection of a non-invasive, in-line, real-time control strategy for monitoring of microbial culture cell density. The benefits of implementing in-line optical density sensor technology have been shown to include variability reduction in dissolved oxygen profiles and growth curve inflection points - representative of the impact of late nutrient feed supplementation schedules.
