The objective of this research was to assess the anticancer activity of polysaccharide extracted from a tropical mushroom, Boletus vermiculosoides, against lung cancer cell line. B. vermiculosoides basidiocarps were collected from a forest in north-eastern Thailand and identified using morphological examination. Its polysaccharide was extracted using hot water extraction and polysaccharide content was determined using anthrone test method. The crude extract of B. vermiculosoides contained 1.77 mg/ml polysaccharide. This polysaccharide exhibited potent inhibitory activity against lung cancer cell line (95.56% inhibition) with 50% cell inhibition (IC50) at 0.08 mg/ml. At IC50, the polysaccharide affected hepatic cell line with 9.92% inhibition. This research suggested the potential use of polysaccharide from B. vermiculosoides for cancer treatment.
