Microbial fuel cells (MFCs-a type of biological fuel cell) are devices that convert chemical energy to electrical energy through the catalytic activity of microorganisms. In a MFC, electron donors are oxidized at an anode with concomitant production of carbon dioxide, protons, and electrons. The latter are transferred to an cathodic electrode, where they produce water as product by reducing oxygen.MFCs are of two major type, mediator MFC and mediator less MFC. They are expected to have a wide range of applications such as wastewater treatment and sustainable energy generation.
