Meeting the Testing Demands of the Food Industry

Robert Donofrio, Microbiology and Molecular Biology, NSF International, 789 Dixboro Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48105

The microbiological testing demands for a commercial laboratory vary widely depending on what sector of the food industry a lab is serving.  This presentation will investigate common elements that all testing labs involved in food testing must address.  Topics such as method selection, validation, and performance (i.e. sensitivity, cost, turn around time) will be discussed.  The presentation will include the approach of a lab towards other issues such as accreditation, product compliance and product recalls.  The presenter will also talk about how the individual testing needs differ in terms of assay type across the food sectors: from retail to processor plants to produce manufacturers.
