Session 21: Industrial process and strain development in fungi
Fungi are capable of growth in diverse environments and can utilize an assortment of substrates. They have developed enzymes that efficiently degrade different types of plant biomass and also produce useful secondary metabolites. The advancement of fungal cultivation techniques has resulted in many beneficial improvements in food and pharmaceutical production. In recent years fungi have increasingly contributed to the biomass-to-fuel industry. The growth characteristics of fungi present unique challenges to their exploitation in industrial processes. Development of efficient tools for fungal strain and process improvement is becoming more and more important.
