Environmental decontamination is a critical step in the reduction or prevention of hospital acquired infections (HAI’s). A lack of thorough cleaning and disinfection of contaminated areas following room occupation has been linked to increased risk of HAI for the subsequent occupant. Studies show that many potentially contaminated surfaces are missed during room cleaning and disinfection, and concern over pathogen transmission between room occupants has led to a push for improved room disinfection procedures. The use of touchless decontamination methods following room cleaning has been shown to reduce surface contamination and, when coupled with current room disinfection procedures, could be an effective tool to reduce HAI’s and improve patient safety. This presentation is on the biological activity of UV technology and its application in the health care setting.
