Within the oil and gas industry, the meaning of "microbial control" varies between applications. Controlling microbes in the reservoir may be necessary to prevent reservoir souring, while topside equipment needs protection from biofouling and corrosion. There are monitoring tools that are routinely used to assess the microbial status of a system, which often do not yield accurate or useful information. This presentation aims to educate the audience on current oil and gas industry practices, and discuss areas of interest where advancements in microbiology technology can assist in monitoring and controlling the microbial population.
