An industrial perspective on education and development will be presented. Recruiting and training fermentation scientist and engineers pose unique challenges, as knowledge of both the science and engineering is needed.  Different modes of training can be employed, including developing completely on the job or hiring people with a high level of academic training.  However, in depth academic education in fermentation is rare in North America when compared to some of the centers in Europe.  Some good practices of partnering with academia to improve recruiting and development will also be shared.
