As the cost of petroleum based chemicals and fuels increases and the negative environmental impacts continue to grow, bio-based chemicals and advanced biofuels produced from renewable materials will become increasingly attractive. The categories of bio-based chemicals and advanced biofuels have been posturing to earn mainstream commercial roles in the landscape of the chemical and energy industries. The transition from petroleum-based to bio-based industries requires a well-defined fundamental economic grounding to enable these technologies to emerge strongly and consistently. The balancing of feedstock and processing economics with product(s) selection will be examined along with investment considerations to attract capital. This presentation, will also examine strategies for promoting transition to bio-based industries based upon lessons from history.
