In its 125 years of pulping operations Borregaard has transitioned from a traditional pulp and paper company to a fully integrated biorefinery positioned within lignin performance chemicals, specialty cellulose, wood based vanillin and 2G ethanol produced from spruce. Core to the biorefinery concept is a high degree of raw material utilization. The economic robustness of the biorefinery concept is demonstrated by a favorable mix of low-volume high value products and high-volume low-value products, and in this sense the Borregaard biorefinery mimics an oil refinery. With the aim of achieving a high degree of raw material utilization and producing a spectrum of products from a range of feedstocks, Borregaard has directed substantial resources towards development of the BALI™ biorefinery concept. The BALI™ demonstration plant was inaugurated in 2013, producing lignin performance chemicals and pure cellulosic hydrolysates from a range of feedstocks.
