The pretreatment process is a key technology for processing plant based raw material by overcoming the biomass recalcitrance and/or disintegrate the biomass structure into its main components, making them available for downstream processing i.e. enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation to biofuels or chemicals. Achieving a uniform and cost effective pretreatment for this purpose has especially proven a challenge when going from lab scale to industrial scale.

BioGasol has specialized in the design of continuous pretreatment equipment for lignocellulose utilization. This poster will present the technical realization of feedstock and process flexible continuous biomass pretreatment system, which can be operated at steady state at “sweetspot” conditions beyond pilot scale and thereby achieving a high release of both C6 and C5 sugars and at the same time maintain a low inhibitor production. This enables BioGasol to tailor solutions to customer downstream product requirements. Furthermore, it will present an industrial example of heat/mass balance and operating costs based on demonstrated data.

This poster will also present the Biogasol pretreatment development history, pretreatment experiences and challenges encountered when developing larger pretreatment units.
