Chemtex, a full service engineering company, will report the status of their 40,000 tonne / year second generation ethanol plant which is under construction in Crescentino, Italy. The proprietary plant design, based on Chemtex’s PRO.E.SA ™ Technology is the culmination of a 6 year research and development program spanning the identification of the right feed stocks via internal agricultural research, development of a commercial scale agricultural supply chain, piloting and scale up of the proprietary pretreatment and hydrolysis processes from batch to continuous scale, resulting in a state of the art, second generation bio-ethanol facility producing 16 million gallons / year annually based on herbaceous feed stocks. This paper will review the work done and will describe the features of the first industrial unit that is under construction in Italy and will be the first demonstration of a sustainable industrial scale production unit for Cellulosic Ethanol.
