Saccharifcation of lignocellulosic biomass by traditional cellulases is greatly increased by the inclusion of the GH61 enzymes in cellulase mixtures.  Previously, how this increase in cellulase performance was potentiated was unclear, as GH61 molecules showed no apparent catalytic activity.  Recent advances in our understanding of the function of these enzymes will be discussed, as well as the process application significance of these results.
