Induced cells of Rhodococcus rhodochrous DAP 96253, which show delayed ripening effects with climacteric fruits and vegetables, are inhibitory to several fungal species. R. rhodochrous DAP 96253 inhibits germination of the spores of Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus fumigatus, Penicillium sp, and Cladosporium sp. Inhibition is also effective against mixed cultures of A. niger, A. fumigatus, and Penicillium. This inhibition is achieved through proximity co-culturing. Under inhibitory conditions, R. rhodochrous DAP 96253 also exhibits increased activity of cyanide metabolizing enzymes, as compared to that of uninduced Rhodococcus.
