The application of biocatalysis in pharmaceutical development continues to grow as it moves from the domain of specialised technology to mainstream methodology, a move that has been facilitated by the increasing commercial “off-the-shelf” availability of enzymes at large scale. This presentation, through actual case studies, will illustrate the development and application of enzyme catalysis, including the essential criteria for ‘industrial readiness’, including availability and performance (turnover, selectivity, volume efficiency) from lab-scale through pilot-plant manufacture. Highlights of recent examples of the application and scale-up of hydrolase and oxidoreductase processes for the rapid synthesis of chiral intermediates at ALMAC will be presented.
