Goundwater Remediation: Then and Now

C. Herb Ward, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Rice University, 6100 Main St, Houston, TX 77005

Problems faced and accomplishments made in the early days of groundwater remediation research and applications are discussed along with the development of contaminant-based and site-based concentration and mass reduction philosophies.  Analysis of current groundwater remediation needs will be used to project future  directions of research and technology development.  Selected case studies will illustrate current success in managing the environmental risks of groundwater contamination by both legacy and emerging contaminants.
