Streptomyces bacteria are commonly fermented on an industrial scale to produce clinically important molecules. Upregulation of secondary metabolism pathways often leads to higher fermentation yields. Low molecular weight chemical messengers are involved in the regulation of secondary metabolism and can induce antibiotic production. We have developed efficient chemical synthetic routes to three types of Streptomyces chemical messengers represented by A-Factor, PI-Factor, and the MMFs that induce the biosynthesis of streptomycin, pimaricin, and methylenomycin respectively.
