Chiral alcohols are important precursors for the synthesis of many pharmaceuticals. Their production by asymmetric bioreduction of ketones represents a powerful alternative competitive to the use of other chemical reduction methods. Herein, selected examples are discussed to highlight the versatile nature of ketone reductases as well as their scalability. The relevance of using ketone reductase in late stage development as well as the common technical challenges will also be discussed. Emphasis will be made on presenting the current state of the art and the green chemistry relevance of this technology.
