Center for Biocatalysis & Bioprocessing (CBB) is a GLP/GMP microbial fermentation pilot plant facility at The University of Iowa. CBB, since 1996, has been providing scale-up solutions to both start-up and established companies in the areas ranging from ethanol to secondary/recombinant metabolites, biocatalysis-based production of products, as well as therapeutic proteins. GMP activity is restricted to therapeutic proteins. Scale of operation includes 2-1000 L fermentation followed by matching downstream processing, which varies depending on the product of interest. Recently, CBB-activity has been enhanced to include screening of microbes/enzymes for various applications, as well as cloning, metabolic engineering and strain development. Typically, client brings in bench-scale protocols and CBB provides appropriate scale-up solutions, including clonal selection, biomass optimization, maximization of product yield in the tank and final recovery. Client receives a fully documented process and materials, including strain, seed-bank, complete protocol, batch records, QA-certification, training as appropriate and product for pre-clinical/clinical trials.
