Potential Application of Rhamnolipid Biosurfactants Produced by  Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Strains In the Formulations of Laundry Detergents

Rhamnolipid biosurfactants from two Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains  were studied for their suitability with some locally available commercial laundry detergents. Rhamnolipid biosurfactants from both P. aeruginosa strains were stable over the pH range of 7.2–11.8, and heating them at 70-90°C for 1 hour 30 min did not result in any loss of their surface-active property. Crude rhamnolipid biosurfactants showed good emulsification capability with vegetable oils, and demonstrated excellent compatibility and stability with all the tested laundry detergents. Rhamnolipid biosurfactants from P. aeruginosa strains act additively with other components of the detergents to further improve the wash quality of detergents. The thermal resistance and extreme alkaline pH stability of P. aeruginosa biosurfactants favour their inclusion in laundry detergent formulations.  It is already known that microbial biosurfactants are considered safer alternative to chemical or synthetic surfactants owing to lower toxicity, ease of biodegradability and low ecological impact. Therefore, this study is of appreciable importance owing to the results obtained.
