Clinical Methodologies for Non Invasive Testing of Cosmetics

Neelam Muizzuddin, Estee Lauder Companies, Melville, NY 11747

Clinical testing is defined as biomedical, cosmetic or health-related research studies in human beings that follow a pre-defined protocol. Clinical studies are conducted on paid volunteers who are chosen on the basis of guidelines of inclusion/exclusion criteria to identify appropriate participants. These criteria are based on such factors as age, gender, the skin type etc.  The subjects are required to sign a an informed consent to inform participants about the purpose of the study as well as duration, required procedures, key contacts, risks and potential benefits etc.

Clinical methodologies can be roughly divided in two types based on the objectives of safety and claims. Safety studies include all the studies conducted to determine if the test material can be irritating or sensitizing on skin.  Such studies include patch tests like “repeat insult patch testing” , “14 day cumulative testing”, phototoxicity tests like photoallergy and maximization tests as well as “in-use” tests.

Claim substantiation studies include a myriad of methodologies to support claims of topical agents for moisturization, elasticity and firmness, barrier integrity and strength, anti-ageing, wrinkle reduction, skin lightening and tanning, sun protection etc.  This talk will discuss protocols and methodologies dealing with non invasive testing of cosmetics on skin.
