Zemea propanediol is a renewably sourced glycol made by the fermentation of corn sugar using a proprietary microorganism.  The high degree of product specificity achieved by the fermentation process combined with downstream separation and purification yields 1,3-propanediol of 99.9+% purity that is suitable for applications where high purity and performance are required.  Zemeaä propanediol is being utilized as a replacement for 1,2-propylene glycol in personal care and cosmetics applications.  Zemeaä propanediol was shown not to be a skin irritant, fatiguing agent or sensitizing agent in Modified Draize Repeated Insult Patch studies conducted on 207 human subjects.  No clinically significant dermal irritation or allergic contact sensitization reactions were found in repeat challenge tests on the same subjects.  These results are in contrast to the skin irritation observed in the same studies using 1,2-propylene glycol, a structural isomer of 1,3-propanediol, that is widely used in these applications.  The results from these human tests show that Zemeaä propanediol has low potential to irritate and sensitize human skin while offering renewably sourced content in personal care and cosmetic applications.
