In recent years consumers have started to express concerns about the excessive use of chemicals in the products they use and are increasingly seeking products that have natural attributes. With regards to personal care products many consumers avoid certain products because of fears over ingredients they contain and this is driving formulators to use more natural raw materials and alternative approaches to preservation. Since these natural raw materials often make formulations more prone to microbial spoilage, this trend combined with the desire to eliminate the very effective traditional chemical preservatives has made the formulator’s job more challenging. Plants and animals are constantly under attack from microorganisms and have developed numerous protection systems against invading microorganisms. One protection strategy inspired by nature that has been used successfully by cosmetic formulators committed to natural systems is the use of Biovertâ, a patented lactoperoxidase/ glucose oxidase system, developed through the knowledge of the natural microbial defense systems in mammals. This presentation will talk about use the Biovertâ system in cosmetic formulations as a natural alternative to preservation with chemicals.
