The Energy Biosciences Institute (EBI) is a coordinated public-private research effort involving researchers from the University of California-Berkeley, the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the multinational energy company BP.  With roughly 60 projects and programs and over 450 researchers, the EBI takes a comprehensive look at the applications of biology to energy evaluating biomass feedstocks, biochemical and chemical conversion processes, petroleum microbiology, and the associated socio-economic and environmental impacts of large-scale bioenergy implementation.  The unique collaborative environment fostered by the Institute has produced some promising innovations for production of fuels from lignocellulose and yielded over 200 peer-reviewed articles in the first three and half years.  Highlights of the EBI major findings and a view of the growth of this unique partnership will be presented.
