Many methods are currently used for the screening of microorganisms and growth media at micro scale in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.  The majority of these methods involve aerobic microorganisms at micro scale; however, when developing an effective anaerobic process, creating, maintaining and monitoring anaerobic conditions throughout the process in micro-scale reactors presents certain challenges.  We have developed an anaerobic method for screening a panel of growth media and growth conditions for Clostridium botulinum using Micro-Reactor Technology’s Cellerator™ for the production of neurotoxin.  A case study will be presented to illustrate the development of an anaerobic system at micro scale for neurotoxin production.  Additional studies conducted on the optimization of growth media and growth conditions in improving the yield of neurotoxin will also be presented.
